Different course styles provide students with a variety of options

The number of courses and course styles offered by Michigan Virtual School provide high school and middle school students with a variety of options. MVS course styles provide a combination of content and student/instructor support options.

The course catalog contains three course styles for high school students: MVS Plus (Instructor-led), which includes Advanced Placement and Fast Track (six-week courses); MVS Basic (Instructor-supported); and MVS Blended (Instructor-less). All three styles are offered during the regular school year, while MVS Plus and MVS Blended are also offered in the MVS summer session. All courses are aligned to the Michigan Merit Curriculum where applicable.

Please note: After the 2013 Summer Session, MVS Basic and MVS Blended will no longer be offered. Fast Track courses will also be discontinued at the end of this semester.

Course Styles:

  • MVS Plus courses are self-paced courses that offer great flexibility, along with a Michigan-certified teacher who guides students through each course. These courses are best suited for students who need or want traditional instructional support services provided in an online environment. MVS Plus courses offer the greatest level of support to students. These courses include Advanced Placement, World Languages and Fast Track courses.
  • MVS Basic courses are Instructor-supported courses in which an instructor serves as a specialized learning facilitator. These courses use highly qualified, Michigan-certified instructors but with a larger class size than MVS Plus courses. MVS Basic courses are best suited for learners who have previously demonstrated academic success working independently.
  • MVS Blended courses provide schools with the opportunity to place students in Core, Literacy Advantage or Foundation pathways. These content-only courses allow independent learning and work best when content is paired with a local teacher.

Middle school courses are in the semester format and range from American History to World Cultures. Middle school courses are available throughout the summer.
