Seat Time Waiver

Seat time waivers allow for flexibility

MVS middle and high school students have the opportunity to take more than two online courses at a time – including a full-time online schedule – through the Seat Time Waiver (STW) program. This opportunity is available through a student’s local district, ISD or a statewide portal.

MVS online courses are fully approved for the STW program and offer students greater flexibility when scheduling, and when most appropriate, the ability to continue their education outside of the school building while earning a local diploma. Online courses provide opportunities to:

  • at-risk students,
  • elite athletes,
  • performers in the arts,
  • dropouts,
  • pregnant students,
  • incarcerated students, and
  • students who are homebound due to illness or injury.

This opportunity is especially appropriate for students who struggle with the structure of a traditional school schedule, at-risk students and students who for any reason are unable to attend school during the day.

Having a student take the majority or all their coursework online is an important decision that should be supported by thoughtful planning with parents, counselors, educators and school administrators.

School approved to offer STW?
If your local district, public school, academy or ISD has Michigan Department of Education approval to offer Seat Time Waivers, your middle school and high school students may enroll directly with MVS. Click here for enrollment information. Click here (PDF) for a check list regarding MDE approval.

Not approved to offer STW?
From 2007-2011, 21 districts, academies and ISDs piloted MDE’s STW program, including a statewide program through Genesee ISD. Non-STW authorized districts can apply for their own approved program from the MDE or use the GenNET STW program. To enroll in MVS courses using GenNET:

  1. Visit the GenNet site.
  2. Choose "High School" from the Search Courses by High School or Middle School menu (at this time MVS is not offering STW courses for middle school students through GenNet)
  3. Choose "Provider" from the Search Courses by Subject/Provider drop-down menu
  4. Choose "MVS" in Search Courses
  5. Click "Submit" for a list of the courses

After students receive permission to join the program, MVS receives the student’s enrollment information.
